Certificate of employment

An employer must submit a certificate of employment to the employee at the end of the employment relationship, at the employee’s request. This can either be a brief or extended certificate.

The brief certificate must state the duration of the employment as well as the work assignments.

In addition to these, an extended certificate of employment should have an assessment of the employee’s skills and behaviour and the reason for ending the employment relationship.

The obligation to provide a certificate of employment will remain valid for 10 years after the end of an employment relationship. However, the assessment on employee’s skills and behaviour should be requested within five years.

Not delivering a certificate of employment is a violation against the Employment Contracts Act and may be subject to a fine. Occupational safety and health authorities may report the issue to the police for preliminary investigation and/or obligate the employer to deliver the certificate under the threat of a fine.
